Antique Biedermeier-Style Oval Burl Wood Pedestal Side Table with Drawer

Cut in the Biedermeier manner, that lovely early nineteenth century mood of warm timber and clean architectural lines, it balances a generous oval top on a single sculpted column, which in turn rests on a shaped tripod platform with scrolled feet. There is even a discreet little drawer with its original turned brass knob, ready to swallow whatever a side table is asked to keep secret.

The burl, or Wurzelholz to give it its splendid German name, is the prized root and stump wood beloved of cabinetmakers for its dense, eye-figured pattern. Here it has been laid up with real care and given a deep honeyed polish that catches the light beautifully. It is a small table with a big presence, the sort of piece that quietly anchors a room.
