This is an authentic 18th century French Louis XVI mirror: hand-carved, gilded, beautifully weathered, and carrying more than two centuries of quiet French history on its shoulders. Sourced from a private manor house outside Paris, it comes to us with the kind of provenance that gives a piece real soul.

The architectural neoclassical frame captures everything we love about the Louis-Seize period (c. 1774–1792): clean straight lines, restrained symmetry, delicate carved garlands, rosettes, and a magnificent pierced openwork crest at the top featuring a central oval medallion.

The original mercury-silvered glass plates carry that wonderful "foxed" oxidation: the soft cloudy patches and silvery patina that collectors genuinely seek out, because no modern process can replicate it. The gilding has mellowed to a warm, dusty gold with the red bole showing through at the worn edges.

A note on condition: this mirror is offered in its honest, unrestored and uncleaned state, exactly as it has survived the centuries. There are minor losses to the carved details (upper left and lower right), a likely missing finial at the very top, traces of old fish glue from historic consolidations, and signs of old (inactive) woodworm. Plenty of scope for sympathetic conservation, though many will prefer the untouched patina as it is.

🪞 Styling & Collector's Inspiration

A proper statement piece. Hang it above a marble chimneypiece, lean it casually in a dressing room, or place it over an antique commode for that beautifully layered French country house look.
