Antique French Hand-Painted "Toilette" Casket, Late 19th Century Wooden Vanity Box with Floral Decoration and Original Key

There is something irresistibly romantic about a box that simply announces itself as Toilette. This late nineteenth century French casket did exactly that on some long vanished dressing table, guarding ribbons, gloves, scent bottles or love letters behind its little brass lock. Today the gilt script still gleams across the lid, framed by hand-painted sprays of wildflowers that wander over a deep, time-darkened ground. It is honest, characterful and full of stories.

The wood has earned its patina the proper way, through a century or more of use, with rubbed corners, softened paint and a glow that no factory could fake. It still has its original key and the brass lock turns sweetly. This is not a pristine museum piece and we would not want it to be. It is a charming, decorative survivor with genuine French boudoir soul.
