An exceptional 7-piece stoneware beer stein set from the early 20th century, attributed to the renowned Westerwald manufacturer Reinhold Merkelbach, a name synonymous with fine German ceramic craftsmanship since 1882. This early ensemble includes one large master stein (server) and six individual mugs, all showcasing the refined detailing, salt-glazed finish, and durable construction that made Merkelbach a staple of Jugendstil-era design.
Each vessel is adorned with richly incised and relief-carved foliate and geometric patterns in traditional cobalt blue, oxblood red, and warm ivory tones. The bodies are capped with elaborately cast pewter lids, each fitted with an ornate thumb lift in the form of stylized lions and floriate scrolls, classic symbols of Merkelbach’s early production period.
This is a testament to the enduring beauty of handcrafted stoneware.
