Rare 18th-19th Century Japanese Carved Hardwood Butter Cask with Mother-of-Pearl & Bone Inlay

Some objects whisper. This one growls. Carved from a single block of dense exotic hardwood and built in two parts, this rare Japanese butter cask is the sort of piece that quietly stops a room. A fierce mythical beast prowls across its surface, eyes set with gleaming mother of pearl and fangs picked out in bone, all rendered in deep, confident relief. It is heavy, it is theatrical, and it has clearly been admired for well over a century.
Dated to the 18th to 19th century, the cask comprises a round footed base and a tall cylinder with a removable top, hewn and hollowed by hand. The engraved mother of pearl and bone inlays catch the light beautifully. A few individual inlay pieces have, understandably, wandered off over the decades, but the whole remains remarkably well preserved and full of character. This is honest age, not damage, and it only adds to the story.
