Few creatures hold a room quite like a lion, and this one does it lying down. A rare and characterful porcelain lion from the storied New York & Rudolstadt lineage, modelled in the noble recumbent pose of the classical guardian lions that have flanked grand staircases and library doors for centuries. The flowing mane is rendered curl by curl, the brow furrowed in that wonderfully theatrical roar, and the whole figure carries a warm ivory glaze with soft caramel shading that gives it the look of aged marble rather than mass production. He is, in a word, magnificent, and he knows it.
The underside carries the crowned RW shield mark of Rudolstadt-Volkstedt in Thuringia, Germany, the celebrated porcelain house whose decorative wares were exported to America through the New York & Rudolstadt Pottery agency in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Alongside it sit an impressed model number 3710 and a painter's mark, the quiet fingerprints of the workshop that made him. Pieces of this scale and presence rarely surface, and this one has survived with all its swagger intact.
Styling & Collectors Inspiration
A lion this confident wants company that can keep up. Set him on a console beside the Chinese Porcelain Guanyin Bust for a serene-meets-regal pairing in hand-painted porcelain, then bring in a little theatrical menagerie with the Striking Pair of Glazed Majolica Pheasants. For a proper library tableau, echo his feline pride with the Hand-Carved Wild Lion Head Bookends, and crown the mantel with the Antique French Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock for a grand-tour drawing room finish.
