Meet a charming little eccentric from the golden age of West German pottery: a Scheurich wine jug, moulded with a generous relief of tumbling grapes and a plump apple, and finished with a glossy chestnut-brown spout and handle. Yet the real story lives in its split personality. One side is dressed to the nines, the fruit hand-painted in deep burgundy and ripe red over a warm cream glaze. Turn it around and the very same relief is left bare, unpainted, because a whisper of a crack in the glaze persuaded the decorator to set down the brush. Like a misprinted coin or a stamp without its perforations, the so-called fault is precisely what makes it irresistible to a collector with an eye for the offbeat.

Marked on the base W. Germany with the mould number 419-18, it is a proper piece of mid-century Rhineland ceramic history, equally happy holding wine, wildflowers, or simply standing about looking interesting.

Styling & Collectors Inspiration

This is a born conversation starter, so let it hold court. Cluster it with kindred West German ceramics for a gloriously textural shelf, then let one bloom-filled jug soften a modern sideboard. A few of our own pieces that play beautifully alongside it:

Details

  • Scheurich wine jug (Weinkrug) with handle, West German pottery
  • Relief decoration of grapes and an apple, one side hand-painted in burgundy and red, the reverse left in bare cream glaze
  • Warm chestnut-brown glazed spout, rim interior, and handle
  • Marked W. Germany on the base, mould number 419-18
  • Circa 1960s to 1970s
  • Earthenware ceramic
  • Approx. 19 x 13 cm
  • Charming as a vase, jug, or decorative shelf piece
  • Honest age-appropriate wear; a hairline glaze crack on the unpainted side is part of its character and the reason for its quirky, undecorated reverse
