Meet a charming little eccentric from the golden age of West German pottery: a Scheurich wine jug, moulded with a generous relief of tumbling grapes and a plump apple, and finished with a glossy chestnut-brown spout and handle. Yet the real story lives in its split personality. One side is dressed to the nines, the fruit hand-painted in deep burgundy and ripe red over a warm cream glaze. Turn it around and the very same relief is left bare, unpainted, because a whisper of a crack in the glaze persuaded the decorator to set down the brush. Like a misprinted coin or a stamp without its perforations, the so-called fault is precisely what makes it irresistible to a collector with an eye for the offbeat.
Marked on the base W. Germany with the mould number 419-18, it is a proper piece of mid-century Rhineland ceramic history, equally happy holding wine, wildflowers, or simply standing about looking interesting.
