Bold, brave and unapologetically of its era, this West German Fat Lava vase struts into the room like it owns the place. The cylindrical body wears a banded mossy green glaze, crowned and footed in glossy tangerine orange, with rows of fat amber discs set into a crusted black volcanic lava ground. A single chunky loop handle finishes the silhouette, half jug, half sculpture, entirely fabulous. The underside carries the familiar embossed FOREIGN mark and a moulded model number, the calling cards of the great Rhineland potteries that flooded the world with this exuberant studio-style ceramic in the 1960s and 70s.

This is the good stuff: thick, generous glazes, that signature textured lava that begs to be touched, and a colour pairing that reads as warm and graphic in equal measure. A confident standalone statement, and a magnet for anyone building a Fat Lava shelf.

Styling & Collectors Inspiration

Fat Lava is a team sport, so let it gather a tribe. Cluster it with our West German Fat Lava Vase with Striped Glaze and Red Drip Base and the moodier West German Fat Lava Vase in Brown Volcanic Glaze for a tonal grouping that runs from fire to earth. Crave more orange? The JOPEKO UFO Design Handled Vase in Orange Lava makes a punchy partner, while the Set of 3 Vintage West-German Vases turns a single shelf into a full mid-century chorus. Set against pale walls, raw timber or a marble top, and it positively glows.
