Hand-carved from a single block of wood and finished in warm gold, he sits in serene meditation upon a carved lotus throne, hands resting in the gesture of contemplation. The face is wonderfully archaic and powerful, with downcast eyes, full lips and the snail-shell curls of the ushnisha rising to a graceful crown. Standing a generous 48 cm tall, he carries real presence in a room without ever raising his voice.
The gilding catches the light beautifully across the folds of the robe and the petals of the lotus base, while the reverse is finished with the same care, the carved drapery flowing all the way around. A grounding, soulful centrepiece for anyone who appreciates Southeast Asian devotional art.
