Pure theatre for the ceiling. This is an Art Nouveau, Jugendstil style chandelier dressed in hundreds of slender cream crystal rods that fall in soft, swagged cascades from a warm gilt brass frame. Four swan-neck arms rise from the crown and the whole piece glitters with little faceted glass drops, so that lit or unlit it does the work of a chandelier and a piece of sculpture at once. It is the sort of light that turns a hallway into an entrance and a dining room into an occasion.

The form is the classic French and Bohemian "stick lamp" beloved of the Belle Epoque, made in the manner of the celebrated Maison Bagues glass-rod fixtures. Ours is a later vintage interpretation of that romantic design, electrified and ready to hang. We are being honest here: this is offered as a style-of piece rather than a signed period original, and it is all the more wearable for it. The brass keeps a soft mellow glow, the cream rods catch the light like spun sugar, and when switched on the inner lights set the whole curtain of glass shimmering.
