A Deity Adrift on Silver Clouds

Here is a small marvel that asks you to lean in close. Cut entirely from a single sheet of leather and pierced with the patience of a saint, this filigree panel shows a celestial figure sailing across rolling silver clouds, sceptre in hand and crown ablaze. It belongs to the great tradition of wayang, the shadow-theatre art of the Indonesian archipelago, where leather is carved into lace and brought to life against the light.

What lifts it well above the ordinary is the colouring. Every pierced cell has been painted by hand in deep aubergine, terracotta, moss and ivory, then heightened with gold and burnished silver leaf so the whole thing glimmers as you move past it. Framed under glass in a handsome gilded vintage moulding, it carries a quiet spirituality and an almost obsessive craftsmanship. A little theatre of devotion, ready to hang.

Styling & Collectors Inspiration

This is a piece that loves company from across Southeast Asia, so let it anchor a wall or shelf of devotional treasures. Pair it with our Large Balinese Hanuman Statue for a confident dialogue of Indonesian gods and heroes, or set it beside the expressive Rare Balinese Garuda Figure to let two winged spirits share the room.

Collectors of sacred craft will want it near the gilt-lacquered leaves of our Burmese Kammavaca Manuscript, while interior designers should try it against a polychrome Balinese Barong Mask for a layered, gallery-of-the-temple feel. Gold frame, warm walls, a single picture light: irresistible.
