This fine antique oil painting on canvas depicts a rare and highly symbolic representation of Saint John of Nepomuk (Joannes de Pomuk), one of the most venerated saints of Central Europe and famously known as the “Bridge Saint.”

Saint John of Nepomuk is traditionally portrayed holding a palm branch of martyrdom, often accompanied by a crucifix and a halo of stars. In the background, a stone bridge over water alludes directly to the saint’s legend and martyrdom.

According to tradition, John of Nepomuk was executed in 1393, thrown from a bridge into the Vltava River in Prague on the orders of King Wenceslaus IV. He was martyred for refusing to reveal the confessional secrets of the queen, becoming a powerful symbol of silence, integrity, and protection against floods. Because of this, statues and paintings of Saint John of Nepomuk were historically placed on bridges, near rivers, and along important trade routes throughout Europe.

The painting is executed in oil on canvas, showing refined craftsmanship and devotional character, and is housed in a classic gilded frame that complements the period style. Such depictions are increasingly rare on the market, making this piece particularly attractive to collectors of religious art, Baroque iconography, and Central European heritage.
