Colorful Handwoven Transylvanian Wool Rug

Colorful Handwoven Transylvanian Wool Rug

A bold and beautifully handwoven wool rug from the Transylvanian region of Romania, dating to the mid-20th century. This striking textile showcases the traditional folk art motifs of the region, characterised by its rich use of colour and highly stylised geometric floral designs. The rug’s palette—featuring deep burgundy, crimson, cobalt, emerald, and magenta—contrasts vibrantly against the dark ground, giving it both warmth and visual dynamism.

Arranged in a symmetrical grid pattern, the repeating floral medallions are framed by a zigzag border in cream and black, lending a rhythmic balance to the overall composition. The weaving is tight and dense, crafted in pure wool, likely using a horizontal loom, with clear evidence of skilled handwork and local dye traditions.
