A 1978 watercolour by J. Schmidt titled "Souvenir aus Deutschland": a village lane climbing past a half-timbered house to a church spire, with a heavy grey sky overhead. The brushwork is loose and sure, and warm ochres and mossy greens keep it from turning bleak. Signed at the lower right, and it still hangs in its original wooden frame under glass, just as it came to us.
