Pour the afternoon a little romance. This vintage Japanese mocha service shimmers with that unmistakable mother-of-pearl lustre glaze, the kind that catches the light and refuses to behave. A tall, gracefully waisted coffee pot with a finialled lid presides over six little cups, every piece carrying a hand-finished transfer of an eighteenth-century courting couple in the manner of Fragonard, all powder and plum velvet and meaningful glances. Gilt rims and gilded floral sprigs complete the picture. It is small, it is theatrical, and it was clearly made for people who take their coffee with a side of intrigue.

The set is marked on the underside L.T.R. Fine Porcelain Japan, the iridescent lustreware that Japanese factories exported in delightful quantity through the mid twentieth century. Honest about itself: this is a charming decorative service, not eggshell-thin antique porcelain, and the romantic scene is a printed transfer rather than a painted original. That is exactly its appeal. Complete, gleaming and ready to perform.

Styling & Collectors Inspiration

This little service loves company. Group it on a tray with our Charming Set of 7 Old Handcrafted Ceramics for a layered, well-travelled cabinet. Lean into the Japanese provenance beside our Vintage Japanese Porcelain Jiu-Jitsu Fighters Set with Ikebana Vase, or set the romantic mood with the hand-painted Moustiers Faience Wall Plate above it. For a grander porcelain statement nearby, our Chinese Porcelain Guanyin Bust brings serene gravitas to the same shelf.
