1946 Romanian Oil on Wood Painting of Blue Cornflowers by N. Alexandrescu, Original Exhibition Stamp

1946 Romanian Oil on Wood Painting of Blue Cornflowers by N. Alexandrescu, Original Exhibition Stamp

Blue cornflowers in thick, fast oil against a dark ground, painted on wood by the Romanian artist Nicola Jean Alexandrescu (b. 1884), signed and dated 1946 at the lower left. The reverse still carries the original “Salonul de Artă 1947” stamp from that year's official Romanian art salon, and the carved, gilded frame is the one it left the studio in. Alexandrescu trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, the same school as Ștefan Luchian, and as a Knight of the Masonic Order (“Cavaler al Ordinului Masonic”) he was later persecuted under the Communist regime.
