Meet a handsome couple from the heart of Germany: a pair of antique Westerwald salt glazed stoneware jugs, the celebrated Noppenkrüge whose name comes from the rows of raised knobs and bosses that march across their bellies like beads on an abacus. Dressed in deep oxblood burgundy and forest green glaze, each crowned with its own hinged pewter lid, they have the swagger of a Rhineland feast and the patience of a museum vitrine. One stands tall and broad shouldered, the other a touch more petite and dressed in a different floral rhythm, a true his and hers pairing that has clearly travelled the centuries together.
Westerwald stoneware has been fired in the Kannenbäckerland since the sixteenth century, and these two carry every hallmark of the tradition: the cobalt and manganese palette, the salt glazed sheen, the relief medallions and the gleam of fitted pewter. Buy one and you have a conversation piece. Buy the pair and you have a dynasty.
Styling & Collectors Inspiration
These jugs adore company. Group them on a console or dresser with other honest German pottery and let the textures play off one another.
- Build a German ceramics wall or shelf alongside the Charming Set of 7 Old Handcrafted Ceramics for an instant cabinet of curiosities.
- Set them against the bold colour of the 1960s West German Fat Lava and Hand-Painted Ceramic Vases, Set of Six to bridge centuries of the same potter's clay.
- Echo the paired theme with the Pair of Handblown Art Glass Jugs, Murano Style WAVES.
- For a moodier vignette, pair them with the West German Fat Lava Vase in Brown Volcanic Glaze.
